Weddings are one of the oldest sacred rituals of mankind and here in Bangladesh, from the food to numerous occasions; it’s an integral part of our tradition. To celebrate the (almost) week-long affair, winter is the best chosen season of all. Now if anyone asks “Who would be the highlight of a wedding?” “The bride or the bridegroom?” You have the simplest answer- “It’s always FOOD”.
Below is a modest attempt at giving a glimpse into the different food items served and relished at several ceremonies held in one single wedding:
Gaye Holud to Mehendi:
Haldi and Mehendi events are very elaborate events and not just incase of decorations or performances. Stalls serving Nakshi pithas, fuchkas, lassi, bhelpuri, Jilapi are in galore and are followed by dinner consisting of Tehari, khichuri or polao with curries. Too bad the bride and bridegroom have to set up on stage politely tasting Firni for the hundredth time!

From Akdh to Waalima:
The expression “In just here for the Kacchi” has recently become not only a popular hashtag, but also something that clarifies the young generation who feels a sharp pain of disappointment if the waiters bring anything other then Kacchi biriyani to the table!
Totally accompanied by kabab, chicken roast curry, a vegetable dish and Jorda or shahi tukra for desert is truly what dreams are made of. Ofcourse and equally mouthwatering Pulao maybe a worthy alternative for a lot others.
Now a days people like to take it up a notch and serve naan, tandoori chicken, grilled lobster or Bengali style Chinese dishes, for one can never have too much food at a wedding! as for the bride and bridegroom, there is some special arrangements as whole mutton or whole chicken roast!

Additionally with all the delicacies mentioned above, it’s not uncommon to serve tradition Bengali food such as Fish fry or curries, scented rice, and bhortas at weddings.

Food has always been something that brings people together. And if you’re a Bangali, you know exactly how much we love our food. So next time when your mom is dragging you to “something random aunt’s meyer biye” just dress up and go…go for the love of food!!
